Well, my fifteen year old's Nubian goat has been sick the last few weeks, had the vets out at least once, they said they thought she had pneumonia, and gave her antibiotic, and my daughter made some healthy "slop" to feed her, kept her in the barn. The goat wasn't able to stand towards the end, so she slung her from the rafters of the barn to help her stand. Well, one morning my daughter went out, fed her the slop, hung her from the rafters, and came back in. Shortly after lunchtime, my dh was out in the barn and looked at her and said she doesn't look good at all - and he touched her and got no response. He came back to the house and told my daughter to get out there fast, and she went out and found she was was gone. :-( I called the vet (Cornell) and asked if they would do a necropsy pro bono, and she said yes, unofficially. So my dh and the younger girls loaded the poor goat into the van and took her to Cornell. The results were she had a chronic pneumonia that the antibiotics they gave her it was resistant to. The start of the thing was that she had worms, which made her lose weight which then she got the pneumonia...
The good news is that the lady she bought this goat from this past spring said she could have another kid in the spring for a 3 hour round of hoof trimming (which we did twice plus a bucnh of cash for the one that died.) The bad news is that she lives about an hour away....have to remember to charge my dd for gas the way the prices are now!!
